Called to the Bar to deal with Culprits

I am currently reading a fascinating book by Mark Forsyth entitled: The Etymologicon, A Circular Stroll Through the Hidden Connections of the English Language. The following passage delineates how the meaning of words develop and change over time, but most interestingly, reflects on the criminal justice system from the linguistic perspective. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all language geeks.
